L’Oreal Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Puritying Micellar Solution Review + Comparison with Bioderma

Every single reader of my blog and their mother probably already knows about my obsession with Bioderma Micellar Solution (review here), so when bloggers started talking about a new possible dupe – L’Oreal Micellar Solution – I had to run to the store to pick one up and try it. So, is it really a dupe?

No. It is not. Despite some people claiming that it is exactly the same, it just cannot be compared to Bioderma. At least not in my book. Having said that, it is a pretty good cheaper alternative for those of you that don’t want to spend a lot of money on a micellar solution. If I’m not mistaken, the 250ml Bioderma in my country costs about 12€, while the 250 ml L’Oreal one costs about 4€. Before I continue with the review or shall I say comparison, I think I should first clear some things up for those of you who are not really familiar with micellar solutions. In short, micellar solutions are water-like products that are supposed to remove make-up, cleanse your skin, and maintain skin’s pH balance. They do not have to be rinsed off and are known for being perfect products for sensitive skin.

Now you probably all want to know how good the L’Oreal Micellar Solution is compared to the Bioderma one… Technically, they both do their job, but the L’Oreal one has a few annoying characteristics. The first one is the opening where the product comes out. The opening is way too big. The solution pours out like nobody’s bussiness and leaves a cotton pad completely soaked up, which is just unnecessary. I’ve used this solution about four times to remove my make-up and a third of it is already gone. When it comes to Bioderma, that same amount lasts me ages!

Another thing is that you have to use up way more L’Oreal’s solution than Bioderma’s to remove the same amount of make-up, despite the excess of product in the first place. When I was removing my make-up a few weeks ago, I cleaned half of my face with Bioderma and half of my face with L’Oreal. With Bioderma, I needed to do two rounds like always – with the first soaked cotton pad I removed my full face make-up, and then went over the skin again to make sure I removed every bit of it. At this point, my face was completely clear of all make-up. When I went through with another soaked cotton pad, there were absolutely no traces of any dirt. But when I used the L’Oreal’s solution, I had to use up four soaked pads before my make-up was completely removed, which is twice as much. And besides that, I also had to to do a lot of rubbing off, because my make-up didn’t come off as easily, with swiping only, as it does with Bioderma.

And lastly, I also experienced irritation every single time I was removing my eye make-up with the L’Oreal solution. My eyes start to sting whenever I get this product close to them, so from now on, I’ll stay loyal to my Bioderma solution and keep using the L’Oreal one for spot cleaning my brushes instead. It works pretty good for that!

How many of you have tried this product or maybe both of them? Are you team Bioderma or team L’Oreal?

Moje mnenje.

Great comparison. I'd been wondering how they held up to Bioderma.Kallie @ But First, Coffee

I guess the difference doesn't seem that huge at first sight, but when you try Bioderma, nothing can compare anymore, haha.

I haven't tried Bioderma, but when people started comparing the two saying L'Oreal one being an exact dupe, I bought it right away. I was quite disappointed because I found it to be only good for pre-cleansing than deep-cleansing. It didn't remove my makeup effectively. As a result I gave up my hope from Bioderma. Otherwise I so wanted to give it a try when I had a chance to get hold of it in France. xxShang J.| The Feminine Crusade

It is definitely not an exact dupe. If you can get Bioderma, I would definitely recommend you trying it.

XD

I am so close to caving in and trying Bioderma. It's a bummer the L'Oreal one irritated your eye! I have sensitive eyes so it's a no-go for me probably!

Quite a few people have now told me that it irritates their eyes as well, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it for removing eye makeup…

Thank you so much for this comparison review, Sandra. It's the best and most comprehensive I've seen. Neither L'Oreal or the Bioderma micellair waters are available in my country but they're at the top of my "if I ever travel or find affordable shipping to my country I'll get them right away" list. Judging from this review I'd skip the L'Oreal and go straight for the Bioderma. It seems like a nice budget alternative at first, but it's the same case with most expensive products: they have better performance or pigmentation so you need to use less, thus you use them up slower and actually save money (or it comes out to being the same value as the cheaper one).Don't know why a micellair review prompted me to write such a long comment, LOL. Sorry! xx

Haha, don't apologize! I LOVE long comments. 😀 And yes, you're totally right. I rather get something that works well and I will use all the time than a bunch of stuff that are just 'meh'. Thankfully, some drugstore make-up items are sometimes just as amazing as their high end alternatives, but when it comes to skincare, I've learnt that a bit more expensive products usually work way better.

I heard about this just to say today and was so happy to see you put up a comparison! I trust you as my resident Bioderma expert, haha, and I'm really sad to know this doesn't totally live up! I'm completely smitten with Bioderma and it's really nice for taking off makeup although it did take a little getting used. It would have been nice to have an alternative (cheaper one at that) but alas! Maybe if I run out of Bioderma before I can get some more I'll pick this up as an "in between" Okay, I'm done, thanks for the review Sandra! :D- JessThe Mod Mermaid

Haha, thanks Jessica! Yeah, it might work as an in between product, but you'll see, once you get used to Boderma, it's hard to switch to something else. 😛

Sem še imela Biodermin sample in ga primerjala z L'Orealovo in sem porabila isto število vatic, preden sta obe zadovoljivo odstranili makeup, Biodermina mi ni bila nič boljša.

Lol. Potem se res definitivno splača Biodermo kupiti, ker če potegneš črto, res nič ne prihraniš. Pa še meni osebno je boljša. 😛

I've been debating whether to try the L'Oreal one or the Bioderma one but the Bioderma one sounds much better and probably works out as better value for money anyway because you don't need to use as much 🙂 xx

      September 5, 2013 / 2:42 pm

I've no experience with micellar waters but every single L'oreal product I've put near my eyes has burned or irritated them. I think they're very chemical-ly (is that a word?!) compared to other solutions.
